India on Wednesday handed over a Cheetah utility helicopter to the Namibian Air Force at the Aero India air show in Bangalore.

India's premier aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will also supply two more Chetak helicopters to the African nation under a contract signed in 2009.

"HAL is committed towards meeting the target of handing over two Cheetahs to Namibia and work in this regard is in full swing", HAL managing director P Soundara Rajan said here after handing over the chopper to the Namibian defence minister.

As per the delivery schedule, the Cheetah is ready and the second and the third helicopter (Chetaks) will be handed over to Namibian Air Force by June 2011.

The Cheetah is a French-origin helicopter designed for operation over a wide range of terrain and is operated by various military and civil operators all over the world.

Due to its excellent power weight ratio, the Cheetah is one of the best suited helicopters for operations in hot tropical weather and missions at high altitude.

The helicopter can be utilised for communication duties (passenger transport), logistics support (cargo and material transport), casualty evacuation, search and rescue, surveillance and observation and under slung operations.
